Girard Medical Center gift targets nursing

Recently, officials from Girard Medical Center presented a check to Pittsburg State University’s Department of Nursing both to support the department’s Health Simulation Center and as a way to say “thank you” for helping provide additional training opportunities for the medical center staff.
Karen Wenzelburger, GMC executive assistant, (Center in photo at right) presented the $500 check to Mary Carol Pomatto, Nursing Department chairperson. Also participating in the presentation was Chris Gossman, a GMC staff member who holds both a bachelor’s and a master’s degree from PSU and also teaches some classes in the department.
“Girard Medical Center is aware of the tremendous asset that the PSU Department of Nursing is to the medical community of southeast Kansas,” Wenzelburger said. “We are appreciative of the cooperation between PSU and GMC and are very pleased to make this small contribution to further foster that relationship.”
Gossman said the gift was in response to a staff training event at GMC that included equipment he had borrowed from the department’s Health Simulation/Learning Resource Center.
Pomatto said gifts like those from Girard Medical Center help the department stay at the forefront of nursing education technology. Even more importantly, she said, the gift represents the strong relationships that the department maintains with regional health care providers.
“The Department of Nursing is very appreciative of our clinical partners,” Pomatto said. “They provide experiences that are so important to our graduates. They are full-partners with us as we prepare the nurses that our state will require in the years ahead.”
